The Mickey Rourke-starring 'The Wrestler' has won the Golden Lion award at this year's Venice Film Festival.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, 'The Wrestler' tells the story of a lonely fighter who is tempted to return to the ring, despite being warned that another fight could kill him.

Critics have said that Rourke's performance in the film, which also stars Evan Rachel Wood, is the finest of his career.

Under the festival's rules, actors who star in a Golden Lion-winning film cannot win the acting awards.

The Best Actor award went to Italy's Silvio Orlando for his performance in 'Il Papa di Giovanna (Giovanna's Father)' with France's Dominique Blanc winning Best Actress for her performance in 'L'Autre (The Other One)'.

The Silver Lion for Best Director was won by Russia's Alexei German Junior for 'Paper Soldier'.

The film 'Teza', by Ethiopian director Haile Gerima, won the Special Jury Award and Best Screenplay award.
