It has been announced that Britney Spears will open this year's MTV Video Music Awards, but not as a performer.
Billboard reports that MTV Networks Music Group President Van Toffler said Spears' appearance on Sunday night's show would involve something "fun and unexpected".
Commenting, Spears said: "MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs? I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated."
Spears is nominated for three MTV Awards, including Video of the Year for 'Piece of Me'.
Toffler also revealed that discussions had taken place with Michael Jackson about the possibility of him appearing on the awards show.
