It has been announced that Laurence Fishburne will be the new star of 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation', replacing William Petersen.

Reuters reports that in a conference call with reporters to announce his casting, Fishburne revealed that he had never seen the series before his first meeting with the show's makers.

He said: "I felt a little stupid and embarrassed that I hadn't watched the show prior to having a meeting with them.

"But I'm happy to say that the episodes that they sent me to look at were really, really engaging and really wonderful, and kind of dark and moody, like a lot of the work that I've actually been involved in. So I'm very excited."

Fishburne will make his debut in episode nine of the show's ninth series, playing a troubled medical doctor and expert in violent behaviour.

There will be two episodes where his character and Petersen's character, Gil Grissom, both appear.

Production on those episodes will begin next month.
