'The Dark Knight' director Christopher Nolan has said he is surprised by the film’s extraordinary success at the box-office.

According to Reuters, the 'Batman Begins' sequel has smashed records in North America, taking $300m in a record 10 days and beating the US 'best second weekend' record previously held by 2004's 'Shrek 2'.

Speaking at a press conference in Tokyo, Nolan said: "When you do a film of this scale, you are certainly hoping to reach a large number of people. But I think we all have been completely taken by surprise by the scale of the film's success in America particularly."

The director added: "I would not be able to point to exactly what it is... If I knew that all my films would have been successful."
