MTV has announced some of the nominees for the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) and Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Usher and Rihanna have all made the shortlist.
Spears is nominated for Best Female Video for 'Piece of Me' and faces competition from Jordin Sparks ('No Air'), Katy Perry ('I Kissed a Girl'), Mariah Carey ('Touch My Body') and Rihanna ('Take a Bow').
Usher is shortlisted in the Best Male Video category for 'Love in This Club' and is joined by Lil Wayne ('Lollipop'), Chris Brown ('With You'), TI ('No Matter What') and Flo Rida ('Low').
The nominations were determined by fan voting and two new categories will open for voting each week from now until the end of August, with the ceremony set to be held in Los Angeles in early September.
Best hip-hop video and best pop video are currently open for voting at vma.mtv.com.
Controversial comedian Russell Brand, best known to American audiences as the star of 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall', has been lined up to host the show.
