African reggae star Tiken Jah Fakoly has been announced as the headliner of the Dún Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures, which takes place next month.

The politically aware star will be one of 150 attractions at the three-day festival, which takes place from 22 to 24 August.

Now in its eighth year, the Festival of World Cultures is Ireland’s largest global music festival and is expected to attract in excess of 250,000 people over the weekend.

The majority of events are free of charge, however some will be ticketed and carry a cover charge.

Along with Tiken, the Festival will feature musical talent from Algeria, Brazil, China, Ethiopia, Mali and Morocco, among other countries.

Opening the weekend will be the highly anticipated Irish debut of Éthiopiques featuring Mahmoud Ahmed, Mulatu Astatqé, Alemayehu Eshèté & The Either/Orchestra.

Ethereal electronica artist Sa Dingding will also perform, as will Tibetan singer Yungchen Lhamo; Balkan funk combo, Balkan Beat Box; Orchestre National de Barbes; Seu Jorge; and West African Griots Banaya.
