'The Dark Knight' star Christian Bale has been released on bail following his arrest over an allegation that he assaulted his mother and sister.
Scotland Yard said that the 34-year-old star was released on bail until a date in September pending further inquiries.
Bale was arrested at Belgravia police station, in central London, earlier today after attending by appointment.
The actor, who last night attended the European premiere of 'The Dark Knight' in the English capital, is alleged to have assaulted his mother and sister in his suite at London's Dorchester Hotel on Sunday.
The two women formally made their allegation at a Hampshire police station yesterday; the complaint about Bale was then passed to the Metropolitan Police.
There was no comment or reports about the alleged incident at 'The Dark Knight' European premiere last night.
Bale was joined by co-stars Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart on the red carpet at the Odeon West End cinema in Leicester Square.

Instead the focus was on paying tribute to the late Heath Ledger, who plays 'The Joker' in the already hugely-successful new film and who has been tipped to win a posthumous Academy Award.

Director Christopher Nolan said of Ledger: "He was terrific to work with on set, a very fun presence, a very gentle guy, just loving to be around and an incredible professional. So, it was a joy working with him and I think when people see what he's done they'll be very, very impressed."
Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, who plays Rachel Dawes, added: "Heath was so good in the movie - he was so incredible to work with.
"Every actor has to find a way to be free in order to be any good, but it's very unusual - even for the most experienced actors - to be completely free in the way he was. When you feel that coming at you it's incredibly exhilarating."
Ledger, who was nominated for an Academy Award for 'Brokeback Mountain' in 2006, died aged 28 of an accidental drugs overdose at his home in New York in January.
The premiere in London's Leicester Square saw stars of the film led up the carpet by a 2.5 tonne six-wheeled batmobile which recently featured at the Grand Prix at Silverstone.
'The Dark Knight' took a US box office record of $55.34m in its opening weekend.
The film opens in Irish cinemas on Thursday 24 July.
