The doctor who delivered Angelina Jolie's twins has said that the star and her babies are in "excellent health".

Doctor Michel Sussmann delivered Vivienne Marcheline (5 lbs) and her brother Knox Leon (5lbs) by caesarean section at the Lenval hospital in Nice on Saturday evening with the twins' father, Brad Pitt, by his side.

Speaking to Reuters, Sussmann said: "The parents and the babies are in excellent health. Everything is fine."

The doctor said that Jolie's caesarean section had been planned for some time but was brought forward "for medical reasons".

He said the actress was under an epidural and could speak to a "perfectly calm" Pitt during the twins' delivery.

"They were very happy," he said.

When asked what Pitt was doing during the birth, Sussmann joked: "He was looking at what I was doing. He was my assistant. No, that's a joke."
