'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' has taken $311.1m (€198m) worldwide on its opening weekend.

According to Reuters, the film, which cost $186m to make, took $151.1m (€95m) in the US and Canada, and $24m (€15m) in Britain.

In France, where ticket sales were boosted by hype surrounding the film’s Cannes opening, it collected an impressive $14m (€9m).

Rob Moore, President of Worldwide Marketing Distribution and Operations at Paramount, told Reuters that the totals were "driven by people in their 30s and 40s, and that audience was excited to see the movie and bring their kids with them".

The opening weekend total easily surpasses director Steven Spielberg's previous record of $202m (€128m)  for 2005's 'War of the Worlds'.
