Kylie Minogue has been awarded the 'Chevalier dans L'Orde Des Arts et des Lettres' (Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters) from the French Government.

The award is one of France's highest cultural honours which she received for her "contribution to the enrichment of French culture".

Speaking about the award on her website, Kylie.com, the singer said: "I am deeply honoured to be recognised in this way.

"French culture has influenced me greatly and I have always had colossal respect for the arts and people of France."

Previous recipients of the prestigious award include Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Dylan, Meryl Streep, Robert Redford and TS Eliot.

Minogue's world tour opened in Paris last night.
