The Bealtaine Festival, a series of arts events intended to celebrate and foster creativity in older age, begins today.
Taking its theme from the Seamus Heaney poem 'Station Island', in which the poet exhorts the reader, "you’ve listened long enough, now strike your note", the festival has over 300 independent organisers from across Ireland involved this year.
Among the artists due to participate are the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange (LLDX), Magic Me, an arts group that brings people together from different cultures and generations, and the octogenarian Patrick Scott, whose work features on the cover of the Bealtaine Bulletin.
Robert Ballagh, John Quinn, Mick Lally, Paddy Moloney, Geraldine Plunkett, Veronica Dunne, Liam Clancy, Tomas MacAnna, Eamon Morrissey, Jennifer Johnston, Eugene McCabe and Joanna Banks are all ambassadors of the festival.
Planned events include:
Music at Glen Road Bealtaine sessions in Donegal
Behind the scenes tours at the Hugh Lane Gallery
Dance in the National Concert Hall with the Cois Ceim Dance Theatre
A mystery tour at the National Museum
30 screenings of the film ‘Grow Your Own’ across the country organized by the IFI
A reading by Jennifer Johnston in Donegal
Drumming at a workshop in Sligo
