Mel Gibson is to play a corruption-fighting police officer in his first lead acting role in over five years, according to reports.

Gibson last played leading roles in 'Signs' and 'We Were Soldiers' in 2002, although he has since worked on the other side of the camera, directing 'The Passion of the Christ' (2004) and 'Apocalypto' (2006).

The Edge of Darkness will be Gibson’s first major outing as an actor since his controversial drunk driving arrest in Los Angeles in July, 2006, during which he made anti-Semitic remarks to police officers.

He has since attempted to atone for his actions by apologising and meeting Jewish leaders, and has undergone treatment for alchoholism.

The new movie, titled 'The Edge of Darkness', is based on a 1985 BBC miniseries but will be set in Boston and is to be scripted by 'The Departed' screenwriter William Monahan, according to trade paper Daily Variety.
