'Sex And The City' star Cynthia Nixon has revealed that she survived a private battle with breast cancer in 2006.

The actress, who played Miranda in the hit show and will do so again in the upcoming movie version, was appearing in the play 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' in New York 18 months ago when she was diagnosed, and had surgery during its run without missing a single performance.

She told viewers of the American TV show 'Good Morning America': "I didn't really want to make it public while I was going through it. I didn't want paparazzi at the hospital, that kind of thing.

"I thought, 'Oh, I don't want this to be happening.' (But) I was very cognisant of if it's going to happen, this is the best way for it to happen; that it's found so early and we can just get right on it."

The 42-year-old, whose mother fought breast cancer twice, added: "I always sort of thought I was going to get breast cancer. (That) there's a really good chance."

Nixon, who has two children from a previous 15-year relationship but has had a girlfriend, Christine Marioni, for four years, added: "My girlfriend was very scared. We made a big point of talking to my kids about it."

She is due to become a spokeswoman for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation next year.
