Leona Lewis is within touching distance of the top album spot in America but Simon Cowell has said she is calm and collected ahead of the US release of 'Spirit'.

Cowell also said that Lewis' attempt to break America would not mean she neglected audiences elsewhere, and confirmed she would appear on 'The X Factor' later this year.

Speaking to The Mirror, Cowell said: "I am absolutely delighted for Leona. She has been working her butt off all year, doing all the promotional stuff. I want her back on 'The X-Factor' this year, so she'll definitely be coming back to Britain.

The music mogul, who reportedly bought a $5m Los Angeles mansion for Lewis last week, added: "Leona has got her feet firmly on the ground and isn't getting carried away by all of this.

"She takes nothing for granted. She has an incredible future ahead - but I only want her to do it if she's happy and enjoying herself."

Lewis, a former 'X Factor' winner, releases 'Spirit', her debut album and already a smash hit in Europe, in America next week.

Despite numerous failures by UK artists to repeat their success on the far side of the Atlantic, industry observers are confident Lewis will capitalise on the success of Number One hit single 'Bleeding Love' in the US market by claiming the album spot as well.
