The young Irish actress Saoirse Ronan is among the nominees for the British Academy Film Awards.

Thirteen-year-old Ronan is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in 'Atonement'.

The film leads the awards shortlist with 14 nominations, including Best Film and Best British Film.

Ronan's co-stars, Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, have been nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor respectively.

The film has also received nominations for Best Director (Joe Wright), Adapted Screenplay, Music, Cinematography (Armagh-born cinematographer Séamus McGarvey), Editing, Production Design, Sound, Costume Design and Make-Up and Hair.

The John McCloskey-directed Irish short film 'The Crumblegiant', which was part funded by RTÉ, has been nominated in the Best Short Animation category.

'American Gangster', 'The Lives of Others', 'No Country for Old Men' and 'There Will Be Blood' are the other nominees for Best Film.

Joining 'Atonement' on the Best British Film shortlist are: 'The Bourne Ultimatum', 'Control', 'Eastern Promises' and 'This Is England'.

Paul Greengrass ('The Bourne Ultimatum'), Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck ('The Lives of Others'), Joel and Ethan Coen ('No Country for Old Men') and Paul Thomas Anderson ('There Will Be Blood') join 'Atonement's Joe Wright on the Best Director shortlist.

George Clooney ('Michael Clayton'), Wicklow resident Daniel Day-Lewis ('There Will Be Blood'), Viggo Mortensen ('Eastern Promises') and the late Ulrich Mühe ('The Lives of Others') are the other Best Actor nominees.

Joining Knightly on the Best Actress shortlist are: Cate Blanchett ('Elizabeth: The Golden Age'), Julie Christie ('Away from Her'), Marion Cotillard ('La Vie En Rose') and Ellen Page ('Juno').

Ronan is joined on the Best Supporting Actress shortlist by Cate Blanchett ('I'm Not There'), Kelly MacDonald ('No Country for Old Men'), Samantha Morton ('Control') and Tilda Swinton ('Michael Clayton').

Javier Bardem ('No Country for Old Men'), Paul Dano ('There Will Be Blood'), Tommy Lee Jones ('No Country for Old Men'), Philip Seymour Hoffman ('Charlie Wilson's War') and Tom Wilkinson ('Michael Clayton') are the Best Supporting Actor nominees.
