The nominees for the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards have been announced, with the Rough Magic production of 'Don Carlos' leading the nominations.

The play made the shortlist in the Best Actor (Nick Dunning), Best Production, Best Designer: Set (Paul O'Mahony) and Best Designer: Lighting (Sinéad Wallace) categories.

Joining Dunning on the Best Actor shortlist are: Anthony Calf ('Uncle Vanya'), Aiden Gillen ('American Buffalo') and Dan Gordan ('To Be Sure').

Karen Ardiff ('The Stuff of Myth', '84 Charing Cross Road'), Ingrid Craigie ('Splendour'), Nuala Hayes ('Scath an Oilc', 'The Power of Darkness') and Eileen Walsh ('Terminus') make the shortlist for Best Actress.

The Best Supporting Actor nominees are: Michael Esper ('Long Day's Journey into Night'), Domhnall Gleeson ('American Buffalo'), Rory Keenan ('The Last Days of the Celtic Tiger') and Dafydd O'Shea ('Look Back in Anger').

Angeline Ball ('The Playboy of the Western World') is joined on the Best Supporting Actress shortlist by Jane Brennan ('Splendour'), Eleanor Methven ('Saved') and Kathy Rose O'Brien ('Leaves').

The nominees for Best Director are: Tom Creed ('Attempts on Her Life'), Jimmy Fay ('Saved'), Mark Lambert ('Caught in the Net') and Rachel West ('Splendour').

Rough Magic is also nominated in the Best Production category for 'Caligula' with Corcadora ('Woyzeck') and Prime Cut ('Scenes from the Big Picture') the other companies competing for the award.

Sebastian Barry ('The Pride of Parnell Street'), Michael Harding ('The Tinker's Curse'), Sean McLoughlin ('Noah and the Tower Flower') and Mark O'Rowe ('Terminus') are the writers nominated in the Best New Play category.

Petra Breathnach ('Blood Wedding'), Sinéad Cuthbert ('Alice in Wonderland'), Tilly Grimes ('Caligula') and Caroline Bronwen Hughes ('Othello') are the nominees for Best Designer: Costume.

Carol Betera ('Othello'), Sabine D'Argent ('Circus', 'To Have and to Hold'), Paul Keogan ('Dead Man Walking') join 'Don Carlos' designer Paul O'Mahony on the shortlist for Best Designer: Set.

Paul Keogan is also nominated for the Best Designer: Lighting award for his work on 'Woyzeck' and 'Der Silbersee', with Marcus Costello ('Same, Same But Different'), Nick McCall ('Scenes from The Big Picture') and Sinéad Wallace ('Don Carlos', 'Saved') completing the shortlist.

Wexford Opera Festival ('The Tragedy of Carmen'), the Gate Theatre ('Sweeney Todd') and Opera Ireland ('Dead Man Walking') are shortlisted for Best Opera Production.

Pat Kinevane, Pat Moylan and Andrews Lane Theatre, Bairbre Ní Chaoimh, Nomad Theatre Company with Livin' Dread Theatre Company are the nominees for the Judges' Special Award.

The winners will be announced in Dublin on Sunday 24 February.
