Talk show host Oprah Winfrey has cut Hilary Swank's hair on her show so that the actress can donate her locks to a charity.

According to People magazine, Swank gave Winfrey permission to cut nine inches off her hair so that she could give it to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths programme.

Pantene Beautiful Lengths is an initiative which was created to help women who have suffered hair loss during cancer treatments.

Winfrey said on the show: "It's taken months to get to this moment. It involves a two-time Academy Award winner, a sharp object, and me."

Swank said: "I've been growing it for the last six months to donate my hair. I've been taking a lot of vitamins and taking really good care of it, knowing that it would go to a woman in need."

The episode of the show is due to be screened in the US this Friday.
