Former 'Coronation Street' star Brian Capron became the first male celebrity to be voted off the new series of 'Strictly Come Dancing' last night.

Capron, who played serial killer Richard Hillman in the soap, and rugby player Kenny Logan had to repeat their waltzes for the judges.

But the actor's dancing failed to impress, with one judge on the BBC1 show saying it was "less like a performance and more like a wake".

Giving Capron a score of five, judge Bruno Tonioli said: "For me it was a waltz from six feet under. It lacked romance. The waltz has a different feel to it, you have to be elated, you have to sweep around the dance floor. The foot work was bad."

Fellow judge Len Goodman was more encouraging, saying it "wasn't exactly ballroom blitz but it wasn't a ballroom disaster", but also awarded him only five points.

It was the girls, who were not facing being voted off, who really impressed the judges with a group swing blues number. Tonioli said: "The men should be afraid, these girls mean business."

On Saturday the girls will compete to stay in the competition, while the boys will perform a group number but are safe from elimination.

The BBC claimed a victory in the ratings battle against ITV1's 'The X Factor'. Saturday's episode of 'Strictly Come Dancing' garnered an average of 7.4 million viewers to the music talent show's 7.5 million.

But a BBC spokeswoman said the celebrity dancing show beat its ITV1 rival - which had a slightly different timeslot - while the two programmes were head to head, and had a peak audience of 8 million.
