Martin Scorsese is to direct a new documentary about the life of the late Beatle George Harrison.

Variety reports that Harrison's widow Olivia will be one of the producers on the documentary along with Scorsese.

The film, which will cover Harrison's time in the Beatles and later years as a solo artist, is being developed for cinemas with the late singer's family providing extensive archive material.

Interviews for and production on the film will begin this year; it is expected to take several years to complete.

Commenting, Scorsese said: "George Harrison's music and his search for spiritual meaning is a story that still resonates today and I'm looking forward to delving deeper."
