The makers of the new Nicole Kidman and Ralph Fiennes-starring love story 'The Reader' have been denied permission to film at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, north of Berlin.

Variety reports that shooting begins next week on the film, which is set in modern-day Germany where a man recounts his love affair with an older woman before World War Two.

Horst Seferens, a spokesman for the curators of Sachsenhausen, said the makers of the film had asked if they could shoot a key scene at the camp but were refused; only documentaries are allowed to be filmed at Sachsenhausen.

Seferens said: "Former concentration camp sites are cemeteries - it's just not appropriate to use them as film sets."
