Kanye West is celebrating after official chart figures in the US confirmed that his album 'Graduation' had outsold 50 Cent's new album 'Curtis' on its first week of sale.

Figures from Nielsen SoundScan confirmed last night that West's album sold 957,000 copies, while 50 Cent's album sold 691,000 copies.

Speaking after hearing the news that he had won the chart battle, West said: "To be a champion, you've got to take out a champion."

"It feels overwhelming. Everyone is coming up to me and telling me how proud they are of me," the rapper said.

Chart rival 50 Cent, who threatened to quit making solo albums if West outsold him, said: "I am very excited to have participated in one of the biggest album release weeks in the last two years."

"Collectively, we have sold hundreds of thousands of units in our debut week. This marks a great moment for hip-hop music, one that will go down in history," he said.

50 Cent cancelled a number of tour dates and performances this week after learning that he had lost the chart battle.
