Britney Spears' performance at the VMAs on Sunday was hardly the comeback she would have hoped for.
Some critics blame the outfit. Others question MTV's judgment in the first place to open the show with Britney Spears.
But whatever the reason, the pop star's lacklustre performance of her new single 'Gimme More' was universally bashed.
A source told People.com: "Britney was supposed to wear a matching corset that she opted out of wearing at the last minute.
"She was just plain nervous because of all the hype and she's embarrassed."
A backstage source who saw Britney rehearse as well as perform, said: "She was extremely nervous.
"It's been a while since she's done this, and she was performing in front of all her peers, on live TV.
"She just got out there and froze. People who were at rehearsal saw something else. It was good. It really was."
Others say the star was thrown by hearing host Sarah Silverman rehearse her monologue in which she referred to Britney's kids as "mistakes."
