Brian Belo, a 20-year-old data clerk from Essex, has won the eighth series of Big Brother after coming top in the public vote.

He beat the show's first set of identical twins who were favourite to win.

Twins Sam and Amanda Marchant, 19, who counted as one person in the vote, were the red hot 1-6 favourites to pocket the £100,000 winner's cheque.

But Brian, who told the housemates he had no idea who Shakespeare was, beat the dizzy, inseparable sisters from Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The series is the UK's least popular since it began in 2000, with an average of 3.8 million viewers compared to the previous low of 4.5 million for ‘Big Brother’ six.

But bookmakers have predicted over £1 million would be wagered in the final 24 hours of show betting, making it the first time a reality TV show has broken the seven-figure mark in a day.

Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg said: “Despite the show's problems its still a firm favourite with punters. We always see a flurry of late bets. This time around were expecting things to go into overdrive."

After 13 weeks in the house the other remaining housemates were voted out in the following order: museum visitor assistant Jonty Stern, 36, activist Carole Vincent, 53, former boyband member Ziggy Lichman, 26, and tree surgeon Liam McGough, 23.
