'The Simple Life' star Nicole Richie has served one hour of her four-day prison sentence.
The 25-year-old star, who is pregnant, surrendered to authorities yesterday to begin serving her sentence, imposed for driving under the influence of drugs.
A spokesperson for Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department explained that federal sentencing guidelines dealing with jail overcrowding allowed local officials to reduce the time for Richie and other inmates with similar charges.
Deputy Sheriff Maribel Rizo said in a statement that Richie was treated "in the same manner as other inmates with a similar sentence".
Rizo confirmed that Richie presented herself at the jail yesterday afternoon and was booked, processed and released about one hour and twenty minutes later.
The deputy could not confirm whether or not Richie had actually spent any time inside a jail cell.
The reality television star was arrested in December 2006 after police spotted her driving in the wrong direction on a Los Angeles freeway. She later admitted to smoking marijuana and taking a prescription drug.
