Scottish actor James McAvoy is to take the role of Scotty in a new 'Star Trek' film, according to the Scottish Sunday Mirror.
The 28-year-old Glaswegian has been acclaimed for his role in Kevin MacDonald's 'The Last King of Scotland'.
He also had roles in 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' and 'Inside I'm Dancing'.
In the classic television series Scotty was played by Canadian James Doohan.
According to the newspaper reports, McAvoy will play Scotty as a young man in a prequel taking the crew back to Starfleet Academy.
The 11th film in the sci-fi series, it will be directed by the creator of 'Lost', JJ Abrams, with release planned for Christmas next year.
McAvoy will next appear on Irish cinema screens in 'Atonement', to be released on 7 September.
