Former 'Lost' star Michelle Rodriguez is joining the cast of 'Titanic' director James Cameron's new sci-fi epic 'Avatar'.

Variety says that Rodriguez will star opposite Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Wes Studi and CCH Pounder in the film, which is currently in production in Los Angeles.

'Avatar' tells the story of a wounded ex-marine (Worthington) who joins the indigenous people of an exotic planet in their battle against those who want to exploit its resources.

Rodriguez, who played Ana-Lucia in 'Lost', will play an ex-marine pilot.

The film has a budget of $190m and will mix live-action and animation; it will be shot in the new 3-D format.

'Avatar' is due for release on 22 May 2009.
