A memoir that Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is working on was the subject of a multimillion-dollar bidding war earlier this week.

Media reports yesterday said that he had signed a deal, reportedly worth more than $7m, with New York-based publisher Little, Brown and Co partnered with Britain's Weidenfeld & Nicolson.

The autobiography, on which Richards will collaborate with Sunday Times journalist James Fox, is due for release in autumn 2010.

"Keith Richards has stood cool at the centre of the hurricane for nearly fifty years," said Michael Pietsch of Little, Brown.

"His story, in his own words - the band, the songs, the tours, the life - will be the most eagerly awaited book ever to come out of the hallowed halls of rock and roll."
