Cameron Diaz is to star in the big screen version of the acclaimed Jodi Picoult novel 'My Sister's Keeper'.

The film tells the story of a 13-year-old girl who takes legal action against her parents for the right to make choices about her own body when a kidney transplant is planned to save her older sister's life.

The younger girl was conceived through in vitro fertilisation so that she would be a genetic match for her older sister, who has leukaemia.

Diaz will play the girls' mother, a former defence attorney who returns to court to fight the case.

Variety reports that the film will be directed by 'Alpha Dog' and 'The Notebook' director Nick Cassavetes and will begin shooting early next year.
