US authorities have released a recording of the 911 call which led to actress Lindsay Lohan's arrest earlier this week.

The 21-year-old was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence and possession of cocaine.

According to People magazine, the tape of the call was released by Santa Monica City Attorney's office.

The person who made the call is reportedly Michelle Peck, the mother of one of Lohan's assistants, Tarin Graham.

The magazine reports that  she had picked up her daughter from a gathering which was also attended by Lohan.

During the call the woman tells the police: "We're being followed by a white GMC, the gentleman jumped out of the car, and oh my God sir, They're following us. We need help."

"We were just coming home... and all of a sudden he came down a side street... We're driving to the police station... sir, please? The gentleman came out of his car."

Later in the call, the woman can be heard shouting "Go, go, go, go..." as she asks someone what the person behind them is doing.

Police who attended the scene arrested Lohan but later released her on bail. If convicted of the charges she could face over a year in jail.
