'Disasters', a new documentary series from the RTÉ Television Archive Unit, begins on RTÉ One tonight.

Narrated by Doireann Ní Bhriain, each half-hour documentary in the eight-episode series tells the story of a major disaster in Irish history, using news, current affairs and social documentary footage.

The series begins tonight with the story of the Whiddy Island oil tanker disaster in 1979 in which 50 people lost their lives.

Upcoming programmes will be devoted to the Buttevant rail crash; the Beaujolais air crash; the Bundoran Central Hotel fire; the British Midland air crash; Donegal trawler disasters; the Loreto Convent fire and the Doolin drownings.

'Disasters' begins on RTÉ One tonight at 8.30pm.
