American actor Jim Carrey is to play Ebenezer Scrooge in a forthcoming adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel 'A Christmas Carol'.

Carrey will also play the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future in the computerised Walt Disney remake.

Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis ('The Polar Express', 'Cast Away') is to direct from his own script.

Like 'The Polar Express' and Zemeckis' upcoming film 'Beowulf', 'A Christmas Carol' will blend live action with 3-D digital animation and a computer-graphics style called "performance capture".

No release date for the film has yet been set.

Carrey recently starred in 'Fun With Dick and Jane' and 'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events'.
