Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne is being sued by members of 1970s rock band The Rubinoos, who claim she has copied one of their songs.
Songwriters James Gangwer and Tommy Dunbar alleged in a lawsuit that the Avril Lavigne song 'Girlfriend' is lifted from their 1979 song 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend'.
They are naming Avril Lavigne, her publishing company and her co-songwriter Dr Luke as defendants.
Dunbar said in a statement on Wednesday, "We are not so naive as to chalk it up to some sort of cosmic coincidence. The lyric, the meter, the rhythm - they’re identical."
The court date has been set for August 28 in Oakland, California.
