Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty avoided jail today after he pleaded guilty to possessing Class A and Class C drugs. His guilty plea came after arriving at court more than two hours late.
Doherty, 28, entered the pleas after chaotic scenes at West London Magistrates Court, where a warrant had to be issued for his arrest because he was so late for the hearing.
After a brief adjournment the judge decided to defer sentence to August 7 on condition that the singer went into detox and did not commit any more offences but left him in no doubt he would face prison if he did not comply.
The court was told Doherty had an appointment at a drug rehabilitation clinic in Harrogate for July 16 with the option of entering its five day programme and that he was willing to do this.
Earlier he pleaded guilty to possessing quantities of crack cocaine, heroin, cannabis and ketamine as well as to two driving offences. Doherty also pleaded guilty to an extra charge of failing to appear in court this morning without reasonable excuse, relating to his arrival at midday today instead of 9.30am.
