Reality television star Paris Hilton will check into a Los Angeles County jail next month to serve a 45-day sentence for violating her probation.

The judge ordered the 26-year-old socialite to report to the jail by June 5 for driving while her license was suspended.

A shocked and upset Hilton called the sentence "cruel and unwarranted." Her attorney has said he will appeal.

She had been pulled over by police officers several times since her licence was suspended last year in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

At Friday's hearing Hilton testified that she had only been driving on the advice of her manager Elliot Mintz who, she claimed, had told her she was allowed to drive for work.

Speaking to Reuters, Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said: "She's going to be assigned a two-person cell, and most likely have another inmate in the cell with her."
