The results of an autopsy on comedian Richard Jeni will not be announced for some weeks.

Jeni, a stand-up comedian who also appeared in the film 'The Mask' and was a regular guest on US TV's 'The Tonight Show', was found by police on Saturday with a gunshot wound. He later died in hospital.

The coroner's officials said that the 49-year-old performer's death had been reported to them as a possible suicide.

No suicide note was found.

'The Tonight Show' host Jay Leno paid tribute to Jeni yesterday, saying:

"He had an everyman kind of appeal, he was a kid from New York and his comedy was that of a kid from New York... He just made me laugh.

His also wrote comic material for the 2005 Academy Awards, which were hosted by Chris Rock.

Last year he appeared in an episode last year of Rock's TV sitcom, 'Everybody Hates Chris'.
