Veteran broadcaster Gay Byrne was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.
However, protesters gathered outside the RDS as guests arrived for the ceremony.
The demonstration, staged by SIPTU and the Building and Allied Trade Union, was aimed at highlighting poor working conditions in the Irish Film Industry.
The two unions are accusing the film industry of promoting tax avoidance and evasion, black-listing their members and boosting profits by reducing wages.
Former James Bond Pierce Brosnan and Lara Flynn Boyle from 'Men in Black II' were among the stars who attended the show.
IFTA TV coverage begins tomorrow, Saturday 10 February, on RTÉ Two at 9pm with Kathryn Thomas hosting the 'RTÉ Guide Red Carpet Style Show'.
It will be followed by the award ceremony on RTÉ One at 9.30pm.
