Playboy model and reality TV star Anna Nicole Smith has died in Florida. She was 39.

A post mortem was due to be carried out on Friday to determine the cause of her death.

Smith died on Thursday at a Florida hospital after being discovered unconscious in her hotel room.

Dr Joshua Perper said if Smith had not died of natural causes the findings of the post mortem examination would not be immediately announced.

"I am not a prophet, and I cannot tell you before the autopsy what I am going to find," Dr Perper said.

Smith's death came less than five months after the birth of her daughter and the death of her 20-year-old son.

Larry Birkhead, a former boyfriend who says he is the father of Smith's five-month-old daughter, has filed an emergency motion seeking DNA from the body of the former model to verify his claim.

Smith's partner and attorney Howard K Stern is the baby's legal guardian, as he is the father listed on the birth certificate.

Born Vicki Lynn Hogan in Mexia, Texas in 1967, Smith rose to fame as a Playboy model but became internationally known for her 12-year legal battle over her elderly billionaire husband's estate.

She had married the oil tycoon J Howard Marshall in 1994 when she was 26 and he was 89.
