RTÉ calls for radio drama entries

The annual RTÉ PJ O'Connor Radio Drama Awards has issued a call for amateur playwrights to enter the 2007 competition.

This is the 26th year of the awards that were established to honour the late PJ O'Connor, former Head of Drama in RTÉ Radio 1.

During his ten-year tenure, he was noted for his encouragement of new talent.

The aim of the competition is to encourage new writers to radio drama and to raise awareness of the possibilities and scope of radio as a medium in the field of drama.

There is one category in this year's competition: the traditional 28-minute play

The winner will receive €3,000, with €2,000 and €1,000 for the second and third prize-winning plays.

As well as the prize money, the winners will receive the professional production of their play and the chance to take part in a writers' workshop.

The closing date for entries is 6 April 2007.

The rules of the competition, entry forms and further information are available on the RTÉ website at: www.rte.ie/radio1/pjoconnorawards
