'Grey's Anatomy' star Isaiah Washington has announced he has begun counselling following the controversy arising from a gay slur he directed towards co-star TR Knight during an on-set argument on the hit show last year.
In a statement Washington, who plays Doctor Preston Burke in the series, described the counselling as "a necessary step toward understanding why I did what I did and making sure it never happens again".
He added: "I appreciate the fact that I have been given this opportunity and I remain committed to transforming my negative actions into positive results, personally and professionally."
The show's executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, said the makers of the show had been working to address Washington's "behavioural issues".
In a statement, she said: "I speak for all the executive producers here at 'Grey's Anatomy' when I say that Isaiah Washington's use of such a disturbing word was a shocking and dismaying event."
