The Who were presented with an Outstanding Achievement award at yesterday's 'South Bank Show' awards in London.

The award was presented to Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, who recently reunited for the band's first world tour in more than 20 years, by ITV chairman, Michael Grade.

The awards, hosted by 'South Bank Show' presenter Melvyn Bragg, recognise British achievement in music, theatre, television and the arts.

Other winners at the ceremony included jazz singer Amy Winehouse, who beat the Arctic Monkeys and Jarvis Cocker in the pop category with her ' Back To Black' album.

'United 93', the Paul Greengrass-directed film about the airline passengers who fought back against terrorists on 11 September 2001, was the winner of best film.

Gilbert and George were the winners in the Visual Art category for their exhibition 'Sonofagod Pictures - Was Jesus Heterosexual?'

The breakthrough award went to Wiltshire three-piece Archie Bronson Outfit; Edward St Aubyn won the Literature prize for his novel, 'Mother's Milk'; and ITV drama 'See No Evil: The Moors Murders' was the winner of the TV Drama category.

The awards ceremony will be broadcast on ITV1 on Sunday at 10.45pm.
