'Grey's Anatomy' star Isaiah Washington has apologised for using a derogatory gay term while referring to his co-star TR Knight at the Golden Globes.
The actor, who plays Dr Preston Burke in the show, said in a statement: "I can neither defend nor explain my behaviour."
"I can also no longer deny to myself that there are issues I obviously need to examine within my own soul, and I've asked for help."
Washington reportedly made the comments backstage at the awards ceremony, while discussing an incident which had occurred on the set of 'Grey's Anatomy'.
At a press conference after the Golden Globes, the actor denied that he had used a gay slur to refer to Knight but later conceded that his behaviour was "unacceptable in any context".
"TR's courage throughout this entire episode speaks to his tremendous character," Washington said in his statement.
"I hold his talent, and TR as a person, in high esteem. I know a mere apology will not end this, and I intend to let my future actions prove my sincerity."
