Author JK Rowling has revealed the title of the eagerly-awaited seventh and final Harry Potter book on her official website.

The book, due next year, is called 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'.

Visitors to Rowling's site had to play a game of hangman to find out the title.

The title was later confirmed by a representative at Rowling's publishers.

In her most recent posting on her website, Rowling revealed that her character Harry Potter has been invading her dreams since she began writing the final instalment of the series.

The 41-year-old writer has previously hinted that the famous boy wizard might die in the final book.

Rowling said: "I'm now writing scenes that have been planned, in some cases, for a dozen years or even more."

"I don't think anyone who has not been in a similar situation can possibly know how this feels. I am alternately elated and overwrought," she said.

"For years now, people have asked me whether I ever dream that I am 'in' Harry's world. The answer was 'no' until a few nights ago, when I had an epic dream in which I was, simultaneously, Harry and the narrator."
