Reality television star Nicole Richie was arrested and charged with driving while under the influence of drugs after she drove down a freeway against traffic.
A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol said that the 25-year-old 'Simple Life' star stopped her car on Ventura Freeway in Burbank at about 1.45am, blocking the carpool lane.
Officers who found her were responding to reports from other motorists of a driver going in the wrong direction on the road.
A police spokesperson said that Richie's car was pointing in the right direction when police found her but her car matched the description of the one seen earlier going in the wrong direction.
Police confirmed that Richie was arrested after she failed a field sobriety test.
They also said that she admitted to taking the prescription painkiller Vicodin and smoking marijuana.
A preliminary alcohol screening test was negative, police said.
Officer Todd Workman confirmed that Richie was alone in her vehicle when they approached her, adding that she was "very cooperative".
