An iconic black dress made for actress Audrey Hepburn for the 1961 film 'Breakfast at Tiffanys' has fetched £467,200 at auction.
The black sleeveless, floor-length Givenchy cocktail gown sold for seven times its pre-sale estimate price at Christie's.
The final auction price set a new world record for movie dresses, but did not top the highest price paid for a piece of female clothing, which remains Marilyn Monroe's white silk evening gown, sold for £643,500.
The Hepburn dress was being sold on behalf of the City of Joy Aid charity which helps underprivileged children in India.
Dominic Lapierre, who runs the charity, said: "I am absolutely dumbfounded to believe that a piece of cloth which belonged to such a magical actress will now enable me to buy bricks and cement to put the most destitute children in the world into schools."
