German-born artist Tomma Abts scooped the pool, winning the prestigious Turner Prize in London this evening.
She was ranked ahead of Rebecca Warren, who had been favourite to claim the award.
Also nominated for the accolade, given to outstanding projects by UK artists aged under 50, were Mark Titchner, and Phil Collins.
The work, which is on show at the city's Tate Modern, ranges from video and live installations from Collins, Warren's sculptures, abstract paintings courtesy of Abts and Titchner's hybrid installations.
Yoko Ono named the winner of the £25,000 prize in a televised ceremony broadcast during Channel 4 News.
Previous winners have included Martin Creed, Damien Hirst, Chris Ofili and Grayson Perry.
