Bono joined Pearl Jam for a duet at an open air concert in Melbourne today, the venue for this weekend's G20 summit.

The U2 singer was Pearl Jam's guest on a version of Neil Young's 'Rockin' in the Free World' at the free 'Make Poverty History Concert'.

Speaking to the crowd of 20,000, Bono said: "Politicians have to do what you tell them to do. We are gonna make poverty history."

The G20 represents 20 industrialised and developing nations, including the US, China, Mexico and Indonesia, and meets every year to discuss economics and trade.

Activists will stage carnival protests throughout the weekend in Melbourne, calling for the G20 to fight poverty through debt relief.

U2 will be joined by Pearl Jam next month in Honolulu for the final date of the band's 'Vertigo' tour.
