Britney Spears has filed for divorce from rapper Kevin Federline citing irreconcilable differences, a court spokesperson confirmed.
The couple had been married for two years and the singer gave birth to their second son just two months ago.
The news broke just a day after Spears made a surprise appearance on David Letterman's TV show.
The court papers show that Spears wants legal custody of the couple's two children - Sean Preston and Jayden James - with Federline getting visitation rights.
The couple have previously denied constant media speculation that their marriage was in trouble.
The pop singer, who has sold 60 million albums worldwide, wed the dancer and aspiring rapper eight months after a 55-hour Las Vegas marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander.
