Oscar-winning actor and director Mel Gibson has been honoured by a Los Angeles-based Latino business organisation for his new film, 'Apocalypto'.

The Latino Business Association's Chairman's Visionary Award was presented to him on Thursday for his "vision and courage" for making the film, an epic tale set in the ancient Mayan Indian empire.

The movie was filmed in Mexico with an all-Hispanic cast.

Gibson has recently been making headlines for more negative reasons, including anti-Semitic comments he made to police in Malibu while being arrested in late July.

Speaking about 'Apocalypto', he told the organisation members, "It's not really a Hollywood production. It's a film made by Mexico, in a way."

'Apocalypto' is due for a US release by Disney on 8 December.
