The Unconventionals, who were the first act to be eliminated from 'The X Factor' over the weekend, have claimed that other competitors won public support with "sob stories".

Speaking after their eviction from the show, group member Elizabeth Ewing said: "We weren't relying on tragedies. We thought we didn't need to."

Tom Newman added: "We've got enough sob stories to sink the Titanic", saying that the group believed that they would go through to the next round based on their talent alone. "But you learn. It's about back stories," Newman said.

Fellow group member Drew Jaymson also explained that the decision to share lead vocals may also have cost them their place in the show.

"We just thought 'The live show is our chance to establish each one of us, as a band'," he said. "It turned out it was the wrong thing. I just wish somebody had told us."

Simon Cowell, who is acting as a judge on the show, described The Unconventionals' performance as a "complete and utter mess".
