'Coronation Street' co-stars Debra Stephenson and Bradley Walsh had a "very close relationship" but did not have an affair, their spokesman said.

The actors reportedly fell in love while playing estranged husband and wife Danny and Frankie Baldwin in the ITV soap.

But Max Clifford, who represents Stephenson and Walsh, said the relationship did not develop into a full-blown affair.

He said: "They met at a charity golf event I held in Marbella in aid of the Rhys Daniels Trust about five years ago.

"They became friends and it was actually Bradley's wife Donna who suggested Debra would be perfect to play his wife in 'Coronation Street'.

"They have spent a lot of time working together and have become very close but they have not had an affair. They have a very close relationship and are very fond of each other.

"They are both now trying to sort out their problems with their partners."

Stephenson, who is 18 weeks pregnant with her second child with husband James Duffield, is good friends with Walsh and his wife Donna.

It is understood Walsh has now flown to Poland where his choreographer wife is currently working.

In May, Stephenson announced she was quitting the soap to spend more time with her family. Walsh is also quitting his full-time role but will return to 'Coronation Street' for a spell next year.
